Description: Fade walks home from junior high, head down, alone as usual. She reaches the front door and finds it unlocked, swinging open to reveal an empty house, all the lights turned off. This gives her pause. Not the emptiness, no; her mother is rarely there when she gets back from school. In fact, they rarely see each other at all these days, avoiding each other silently in the halls. But the door left open was unusual. That woman was more careful than that.
She ignores it, though, and goes to her room where she makes half-hearted attempts to do her homework for a short while before giving up and curling up in her bed, falling into a restless sleep. The next day is the same: a blur of school and social isolation, a lonely walk home, a dark and empty house. The day after is the same. And the next. And the next. The next day, she finds that she has started running low on food.
It's not a problem. There's a little money left, and she doesn't eat much these days anyway. As the weeks go by, there is a quiet gnawing of understanding in the back of her mind, but it is drowned out by the ever present static that surrounds her. She leaves the door unlocked every morning as she heads to school. Every night she props a chair under the door handle, unless she forgets. She forgets more often than not. She doesn't feel afraid of what might happen. She doesn't feel anything.
