Description: Kaoru, no more than a year younger than her current age, stands in her dark, dingy house. It looks like a tornado went through it- the furniture is overturned and broken, frames hanging crooked on the wall. The room is lit only by a bit of light that spills in from outside, through a high window and an open door.

And there is a man, kneeling in front of her, head bowed in a show of subservience. He's easily recognizable from her other memories as Kuga, her ever-present follower, but for now he is no more than a stranger.

Kaoru stares down at him, feeling nothing but the dull, empty void of resignation.

"Fine. Kill me." She eventually spits it out. The man does not move. A stab of anger invades her acceptance. "Why don't you kill me!?"

There is another moment of silence. Then he stands. She has her eyes on the sword at his waist, bracing impatiently for the inevitable, so she doesn't realize what he's actually doing until she feels the fabric settle on her shoulders. He towers over her, almost twice her height and full of power, and his large hands are gentle as he carefully wraps her in his cloak.

"I can't," he sighs, his eyes still down-turned in obedience. "You are now...my master.

A mindbreaker commands those with power. I must protect you with all my strength. I will...obey your orders."

Outside the window, a pair of birds fly past, chirping into the distance. Kaoru glances over, staring at their fading silhouettes. And finally, finally, she starts to understand.

So that's how it is. That's why things turned out this way.

Her sin has a name. Mindbreaker.

"People are...like birds," she finds herself muttering, her voice empty and cold. "Would you die if I told you to?"

Kuga hesitates for only half a second. "...yes."

It's the truth. She could tell even if his voice didn't betray it, can feel it in the wave of fear that fills his mind at the question. He really would. With no more than a word, she could command this person to lay down and give up his life. The existence of this person was now in her hands. She controlled him, owned him, and could, in an instant, destroy him as she pleased. It would be so easy. She could make him do whatever she wanted.

"That isn't...what I want."

Kuga looks up, meets her gaze in surprise. The words hang heavy in the air between them, and she realizes that she's crying. She realizes that she hasn't cried in a long time. She hasn't felt anything in a long, long time. Her chest squeezes painfully, her throat tight. 'You are my Master.' She could order him to do whatever she wanted him to do.

"I order you...to hold me."

He takes her in his arms without hesitation, without fear. The physical contact is like an electric shock, and a lifetime of loneliness threaten to wash her away along with her tears.
